Coming from Indiana, I'd never taken a taxi before arriving in Seoul.
However, nowadays I probably taxi too much XD
Though I've never experienced cabs in other cities (except Tokyo T___T) I've heard how cabs are expensive elsewhere. I can vouch for taxis here in Seoul, though, and I'd agree that the prices aren't too bad at all ^__^
Even the black/deluxe taxis that we hear so many negative things about...if you are going short distances, they are fairly reasonable. For example, we taxied from Hongdae to Sinchon with a deluxe taxi (because regular taxis literally refused us...we even got kicked out of a taxi) and it was still under $10~
Also, we've discovered that some taxi drivers really do not like to make u-turns T__T if you need to be going the opposite direction that the taxi is facing, sometimes they will make you get out and grab a taxi from across the street. At least in my case, that is.... :( hehe
Like anywhere else (I assume) some taxi drivers are nicer than others, but overall I have been pretty pleased with my cab drivers ^^~
